Virat Kohli 183 vs Pakistan highlights- Asia Cup 2012

Virat Kohli 183 Runs vs Pakistan Asia Cup 2012
The last time the two teams met, India made it through to the World Cup final. In Mirpur, the stakes may have been lower, but the contest was as captivating as a one-day encounter can be. Pakistani stamped their authoriy early in the match, with each of their openers scoring a century. But Virat Kohli replied with a knock that can be counted among ODI cricket’s best. Take a look at how India achieved their highest ever run chase, guided by the silken Kohli’s 183-run innings.

• This was the first meeting between India and Pakistan in almost a year. The last time these two teams faced each other was on March 30, 2011 at Mohali in the World Cup semi-final.

• Misbah-ul-Haq was captaining Pakistan against India after a gap of three years and eight months. Interestingly, Misbah had made his captaincy debut against India in the 2008 Asia Cup.

• Shahid Afridi was playing his 200th day-night ODI. He became the fourth player to do so after Ricky Ponting (215), Mahela Jayawardene (213) and Sachin Tendulkar (208).

• When Misbah elected to bat first, it was the eighth consecutive time that a captain batted first after winning the toss in India-Pakistan games.

• The 224-run partnership between Mohammad Hafeez and Nasir Jamshed broke and established many records. Some of them are listed below:

• On 91, the pair established Pakistan’s highest opening partnership against India in Asia Cup matches, beating the 90-run partnership between Salman Butt and Shoaib Malik at Karachi in 2008.

• On 100, it became the first century opening partnership for Pakistan against India after 20 innings (since Salman Butt and Shahid Afridi added 131 runs at Kanpur in 2005).

• On 136, the pair established Pakistan’s highest opening partnership in all Asia Cup matches. These two had added 135 against Bangladesh in the first match of the tournament on March 11.

• On 145, the pair set Pakistan’s highest opening partnership against India, beating the 144-run stand between Aamir Sohail and Saeed Anwar at Singapore in 1996.

• On 160, the pair established the highest opening partnership in India-Pakistan ODIs, expunging the 159-run stand between Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar at Dhaka in 1998.

• On 200, the pair set Pakistan’s fourth double-century opening partnership in ODIs.

• On 202, the pair established the highest opening partnership in the Asia Cup, eclipsing the 201-run partnership between Sanath Jayasuriya and Kumar Sangakkara for Sri Lanka against Bangladesh at Karachi in 2008.

• The Hafeez-Jamshed partnership is Pakistan’s second-highest opening partnership in all ODIs, next only to the 228-run (unbroken) partnership between Mohammad Hafeez and Imran Farhat against Zimbabwe at Harare in 2011.

• The Hafeez-Jamshed partnership is also the second-highest opening partnership against India by any side after the 235 run stand between Gary Kirsten and Herschelle Gibbs at Kochi in 2000.

• Mohammad Hafeez (105) made his fourth ODI hundred in his 98th match – his first against India in his fourth match against them.

• Nasir Jamshed (112) made his maiden ODI hundred in his 15th match. His previous highest was 74 against Zimbabwe at Hyderabad in 2008.

• Hafeez and Jamshed provided the fourth instance of both Pakistan openers scoring a hundred together – the first such instance against India.

India Pakistan Asia Cup Match Scorecard

• This was the third instance of two openers scoring hundreds together in a match against India. Geoff Marsh (104) and David Boon (111) for Australia at Jaipur in 1986, and Gary Kirsten (115) and Herschelle Gibbs (111) for South Africa at Kochi in 2000, provided the other two instances. Interestingly, India went on to win the game on all three occasions.

• Shahid Afridi, on 1, completed 7,000 ODI runs – in his 341st match and 316th innings. He became the sixth Pakistani and 30th player overall to reach this landmark.

• Afridi also became only the second player – after Sri Lanka’s Sanath Jayasuriya – to complete the all-round double of 7,000 runs and 300 wickets.

• Pakistan posted a 300-plus total for the 16th time against India.

• Sachin Tendulkar, on 26, completed 2,500 runs against Pakistan. He became the first batsman to do so.

• Virat Kolhi (183 off 142 balls) made his 11th ODI hundred – his seventh in a chase. All seven have been for a winning cause.

• Kohli’s innings is the joint second-highest innings in a chase, behind only Shane Watson’s 185* against Bangladesh at this same ground in 2011 and along with MS Dhoni’s 183* against Sri Lanka at Jaipur in 2005.

• Kohli’s innings is the highest ever by any batsman against Pakistan in ODIs, beating West Indies’ Brian Lara’s 156 at Adelaide in 2005. Incidentally, the previous highest by an Indian against Pakistan was 148 by MS Dhoni at Visakhapatnam in 2005.

• Kohli’s innings is also the highest in an Asia Cup match, bettering Younis Khan’s 144 against Hong Kong at Colombo SSC in 2004.

• Kohli’s innings is also his personal best, beating the 133* he made against Sri Lanka at Hobart on February 28, 2012. Interestingly, his previous highest against Pakistan was a paltry 18 (in three innings) at Dambulla in 2010.

• The hundred was Kohli’s fourth at Mirpur. He had made 102* vs Bangladesh in 2010, 100* also vs Bangladesh in the 2011 World Cup, 108 vs Sri Lanka on March 13, 2012 – and 183 today.

• Kohli’s four hundreds are the most by any batsman at Mirpur. He was earlier level with Gautam Gambhir on three hundreds.

• Kohli’s 732 runs are also the maximum by a visiting batsman at Mirpur. He moved ahead of Gautam Gambhir’s tally of 619 runs.

• The second and third wickets added 133 and 172 runs respectively for India. This was after India had lost their first wicket without a run on the board. This provided only the second instance in ODI history of a team putting on 100 runs for second and third wicket after losing their first wicket on zero. South Africa added 114 and 105 runs for the second and third wicket after losing their first wicket on zero against Netherlands at Basseterre in 2007 (they added 134* runs for the fourth wicket as well).

• India (330 for four) put on their highest successful chase, beating the 326 for eight against England in the NatWest Series final at Lord’s in 2002.

• It was also the highest successful chase for any side against Pakistan.

• India have now most chased down a victory target of 300 runs or more on 11 occasions – more than any other team. Sri Lanka are second with seven such instances.

• The match aggregate of 659 runs for the loss of 10 wickets is a new record in the Asia Cup. Pakistan and Bangladesh had made 631 runs for the loss of 12 wickets at Dambulla in 2010.

• The match aggregate is the second highest in India-Pakistan matches, next only to 693 for the loss of 15 wickets at Karachi in 2004.
